ARTIST STATEMENT

Hi! Thanks for visiting. I started painting as a way to communicate my love of pattern and color. Each of us is drawn to a color or palette that we find energizing, soothing, or even disruptive. We are drawn to places or items with these colors - rooms, fabrics, or nature, for instance. Capturing these patterns and colors unifies us with the world around us. Color has power, and our connection with it can bring inexplicable joy and peace.

I use non-traditional colors and heavy patterns to communicate; finished paintings feel familiar but also new. My subject matter is based in the organic but often has an industrial structure, which reflects the complex and repetitive structures in. nature. Layers of color and texture work in paintings, just as they do in your favorite music or your favorite food.

My work is in private and corporate collections in Oregon, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and Tennessee.  I’ve shown and sold at several national shows, juried shows, and multiple galleries.

BIO

Kristin is a mixed media artist who was raised in Kansas, where she earned an English Education degree at Kansas State University and a masters in Counseling at Wichita State University. While her first formal art class was a design course in college, she’s studied under several outstanding teachers, including Marian Lefeld, Susan Gurskin, and Emily LaCour. Kristin often takes pictures to capture ideas and shapes that will inspire future work. She has been lucky enough to fill a travelers log with pictures of architecture, nature, textiles, and local culture, which have in turn given new shape to color, pattern and texture to put on canvas. Kristin has also lived in Tennessee and Arizona, and now lives and paints in Texas, where good live music and salsa are everywhere. She is a member of the artist collective Grapevine Art Project.
